How many watts does a laptop use

Who has a laptop knows that the machine consumes electricity. So how many watts does a laptop use?

A laptop typically uses 60-150 watts of power. A watt is a measurement of power , or the rate at which energy is converted from one form to another. Energy is commonly measured in Joules . One watt equals 1 joule per second. Laptop power consumption depends on several factors including: CPU usage, hard drive usage, USB devices plugged into the computer and the laptop screen brightness setting. To measure your laptop’s power use, you can get a Watts Up electricity usage meter from P3 International.

A laptop that is in use for 8 hours per day, 5 days a week will consume approximately 4,320 watt hours or 4.32 kilowatt hours (kWh) in a month. This is the equivalent of running two 60-watt light bulbs for one month. If you are using a laptop with a built-in battery, then your total monthly watt usage will be reduced by the number of watt hours that the battery can store. For example, if your laptop has a six-cell, 4400mAh battery, then your total monthly watt usage would be reduced by 264 watt hours (6 x 4400).

The average power consumption of laptops is between 40 to 100 watts, depending on their hardware configuration.

A laptop uses an average wattage of 50-100 W, but this value can increase up to 200 W during intensive performance or when charging the battery.

Since laptops don’t have a standby mode, the computer and the screen constantly consume power. Your laptop uses an average of between 40 and 100 watts when on or charging (if it’s plugged into a wall outlet). When left plugged in overnight, your computer might use up to 200 watts.

WATTAGE PER DEVICE:

Laptop battery – 50-60 W

Operating system – 5-10 W

Keyboard – 2-5W

Lights – 1W

Hard drive memory – 4-8W

DVD/CD drive – 3-7 W/1.4-2.8 A @ 5 V (alternative current)

Monitor control panel – 3-10W

Monitor – 45-75 W

Charging circuit – 5-20 W (for a plugged in laptop)

Graphic Card Use

HIGHER the performance of a graphics card, HIGHER is the power consumption. For instance, when playing a high-end game, the GPU in your laptop will provide better visuals. Most gaming laptops and workstations for tasks like machine learning and data science generally come with a high-end GPU such as RTX 2080, 2070, or 2060.

Adapter Wattage

If your laptop came with a 60W adapter, then it’ll consume less than a laptop that comes with a 90W adapter because that’s the number of watts it’ll be spending when in use.

Gaming Laptop Use Watts

Moreover, almost every gaming laptops are heavy and bulky since they have been equipped with the best of everything. From processors to having powerful batteries, gaming laptops have all of it.

To check the power consumption of a gaming laptop, you may want to check the charger that is charged with. One of the most favored gaming laptops, Acer Predator Helios 300, which we have mentioned in almost every laptop series as one of the best laptops, has a charger with 180W power. This means it consumes at least 180 Watts per hour.

WATTAGE PER USER:

PC use – 50-100 W (in addition to all of the above)

TV use – 100-200 watts per hour. Watching one 3hr TV show uses about as much energy as running your computer for 7 hours. (TV and monitor use is not included in “operating system” wattage, but it is commonly excluded from PC/laptop usage measurements.) For more useful info go here .
