They lack basic functionalities like a usable web browser and application store, they run very old versions of popular software (for example: Windows XP instead of 7), and they have obsolete hardware. But these are all merely symptoms of the real issue: the computer systems being used in schools are simply poor quality when compared to general standards for computing hardware and software.
In addition, school networks are often locked down so that students can’t install any software or games that aren’t preapproved by the school board. This practice not only prevents students from personalizing their computer environment, but also hampers their ability to learn essential computer skills. School computers block everything
school computers as a whole could use improvement, but I think the program that comes pre-installed on school laptops is not being used properly. banning Google Docs and other programs from school laptops just shows that the person who runs the program doesn’t know anything about using it and only wants people to use it for business purposes (i.e., typing up letters or resumes) instead of making slideshows for an English project or giving presentations in class. why would we take notes on Microsoft Word when we could make our own digital notebooks? there’s no reason these things shouldn’t be allowed in schools anymore.
Why aren’t all schools using the same computers?
I feel like most computers, not just school supplied ones, are very slow and lack the memory needed to easily do things that require more power than they can handle. This is especially true with newer programs that keep coming out (like Windows 10). Computers barely last a year now before needing an upgrade. If you’re lucky, your computer will last you for 3 years (and maybe less), which makes them seem like crap.
